So, here it is....
The "Send Erik Around the Bend Appeal":
A practical aproach to help him (and yourself* simultaneously).
* will become clear further down..
This is a non registered, non incorporated charitable appeal. It's main goal to allow Erik to finally achieve his dream of walking the Camino, but in such a manner that he is able to start a substantial distance before the tourist trap, so that it might actually do him some good...
The difficult thing about charitable appeals is that it usually involves some form of money exchanging hands, normally after which the giver will be bombarded by junk-mail and/or spam-email in order to repeat the act of generosity or to increase the value of the standing order.
Typically the junk-mail will include the photo of a horse or donkey, ribs clearly visable, in a beautiful meadow with green luscious grass. Or one of an exhausted, poor but smiling fellow human being you have never seen... and never will.

So in what way will this appeal be different?
- You Will Not get any junk-mail and/or spam-emails.
- This non registered, non incorporated charitable appeal will guarantee 100% of funds raised will go directly to the course.
- No admin cost. No fee will be charged for registration.
- 100% efficiency in spending of funds on the needs to achieve the goals of the appeal, as funds will solely be used on route towards food and accommodation.
(*) What will you receive for your contribution?
- The more you sponsor me, the longer i will stay away! This should encourage lots of people... I wont be coming around, drinking your wine and upset you all with my opinions...
- on completion of the walk i will email (printing not necessary, safe the planet!) a photo of an exhausted, poor but smiling fellow human being you actually know... This photo will also give you fair warning that i will be making my way back home!
But wait, that's not all!!!
I'm willing to share spiritual benefits!
- On arival at the Cathedral, i will, for every sponsor, light a candle with a prayer of their choice.
- As i will earn indulgence, since it will be given to me, i am aloud to do with it what i want... I will not claim it for myself but share it under my sponsors! (percentage based on total funds given).
- If i am aloud to confess, (it's rumoured that non Catholics are not...) i will name all the sponsors by name, stating i financially (ab)used them...
A stumble block, brought to my attention by a friend brainstorming about the sponsorship solution:
"Sounds like fishing for a free holiday to me..."
Very valid... If you agree with this statement, here is a solution:
So, to re-cap; I will only spend towards food and accommodation on route. nothing else...
- I will except sponsorship per kilometre, minus the last hundred. In other words, i won't take any funding towards the costs over the last 100km, the touristy bit...
- All travel, to starting point and from finish, will be paid by me.
- Any "gear" needed will be paid by me.
